Well its nearly the end of 2015 and Christmas is upon us, What a great year it has been here at Garston Entertainments.

To end the year in style we thought we would treat you to an entertaining and informative interview with our exclusively managed singing waiters act The Sing a Long Waiters

The Sing a Long Waiters have successfully performed hundreds of shows over the last 2 years and are very well placed to answer any questions we can throw at them regarding how their show works and what it`s like to be a surprise singing waiter at your Wedding, Corporate Event, Party or Function

We settle down in a coffee shop and the guys enter looking very relaxed and its immediately apparent that these guys have that `comedy` chemistry between them and a natural ability to make people smile and laugh

Hello Maurice and Darren, thanks for doing this interview for us and how has 2015 been for you guys?

Maurice: No problem and thanks for buying us coffee (he takes a huge gulp but chokes as its too hot)

Darren: (Laughs) 2015 has been the best year for us and long may it continue, well until 31st December anyway, but seriously we have had such a great time performing at our shows and we have met some fantastic characters along the way.

That’s great to hear, now how long have you been doing this act for?

Darren: The Sing a Long waiters act has been running now for around 2 years, before we created this show we were a full time vocal comedy double act that toured all over the world for companies like First Choice and Thomson Holidays.

Maurice: We thought we would bring a bit of light heartedness (if that’s a real word) to the popular genre of singing waiters because everyone needs to laugh at a celebratory event or dinner.

Of course, I bet many people ask whether you are `real` waiters when booking you and if you can wash the dishes.

Maurice: Yes we had a situation a few months ago when the client thought he wouldn`t need to employ any other waiters (laughs)

Darren: When we told him that we weren’t trained waiters and that he will have to draft in real waiting staff for his wedding, we had a good laugh with him about it, but no we are not real waiters, just pretend ones.

How long do you actually `wait on` for the guests?

Darren: We serve the guests through the starter and main course usually and then perform our `reveal` just as the desserts have been served.

Maurice: Although we have performed at events where there was no meal involved like a drinks reception or serving canapés throughout the evening and the hardest part was not eating one but maybe we will in the future (Laughs)

You must have an endless supply of waiters uniforms in your wardrobes? Or does the client supply them?

Maurice: We have all the basics like black trousers, white and black shirts and a black waist jacket but we always contact the hotel or catering company and ask if they ask if they have specific uniforms and in most cases they lend us any branded uniforms to make us blend in with the real staff at the venue

Darren: We have been that convincing that we have been offered jobs at loads of hotels

(All laugh)

Is it just waiters you impersonate or can the client request other type of staff members or even something out of the ordinary?

Maurice: Yeah we wholeheartedly encourage the client to get involved in making and helping deliver the surprise to make it really entertaining or they can just sit back and leave it to us. We can be drunken guests, food hygiene inspectors, grumpy room managers, you name it, we’ve heard it, but if the client wants a certain thing then we do our best to facilitate that.

Darren: We have our own very specific tried and trusted way of starting the show (which they tell us is top secret) but we are always excited when the client wants to get involved as they feel like they have played a big part in the surprise for their friends or colleagues.

So you could say that it`s as exciting for the people booking you as it is for the guests, Can the client request songs that you perform?

Maurice: Definitely, we pride ourselves on great communication prior to the big day it’s often all very secretive and we always ask if they have any songs in particular that they would like to be performed by us, as long as it’s in our vocal range and not something by Mariah Carey or Celine Dion! (All laugh)

Darren: As our name would suggest though the songs we perform are really well known hits that everyone at least knows the chorus to. We even have guest’s get on the microphone if they’re brave enough!

Well that was actually my next question; do you interact with the audience when you are performing as the waiters?

Darren: Yes that`s the most thrilling thing about performing this show, getting involved with the audience, I usually get cuddled by the older women

Maurice: That’s just a normal day for you though (all laugh) we improvise a lot during our performance and try to make sure that the audience feels comfortable with us and we can laugh and joke around with them.

What sort of music do you sing?

Maurice: In short, everything, well, almost everything, Not thrash metal. We sing a large repertoire of music including songs from musicals, swing, soul and all those ‘sing a long’ favourites.

Darren: We try to be as varied as possible, some singing waiter shows perform opera, which is always popular, but after the well known numbers have been performed it can be tough to join in! Though it is something we will be adding very soon, like chocolate cake, it will be in moderation! We guarantee the audience will know and can sing along to all of our songs, we just like to make sure we tailor everything perfectly to the client

How long do you perform for?

Darren: it depends on the event but generally 30-60 minutes of singing unless we are requested otherwise and there is the entire service leading up to the ‘reveal’ which is often around an hour or more

Maurice: Our speciality is to keep the audience engaged after the `reveal` has been made and that`s why we sing songs you know so you won`t even want to nip to the loo!

Can I hire more than 2 of you for my event?

Darren: yes we can add male or female singers, because we have been performers for over 20 years, we have made some fantastic contacts with very talented performers and they all are of a very high standard.

Maurice: We know them all personally, they are of an extremely high standard and know how we work and what we expect.

For people who are not familiar with Singing waiters and have never booked any live music before, do you supply the music system or do you perform acoustically?

Maurice: we don`t perform acoustically, we supply all of the PA (public address) equipment for the performance and we try and keep it in a very discreet area of the venue as to not arouse suspicion.

Darren: we have a fantastic sound system and we can create a really great atmosphere around the room – but not so loud people will be running out holding their ears!

How far do you travel for a show and does this affect the cost in any way?

 Maurice: We travel all over the UK and beyond to perform our shows, I wouldn`t call us jet-setters more car-setters! but obviously if we get booked for a gig on the moon it will cost more than a show ‘round the corner’ (Maurice then goes on to assure me that if a booking came in for the moon that they would definitely consider it)


Now lets get to the nitty gritty guys, how much do you cost and do you offer any other packages when people book your Sing a Long Waiters

 Darren: Our price varies depending on location and which package you decide to have, we can provide the basic waiter package which includes up to one hour of service in which we really get to know your guests by getting up close and personal with them, but not too intrusive! Then up to an hour of singing performance once we have revealed ourselves as singing waiters. We always say for the best quote you should contact Garston Entertainments and get a bespoke price and all package details for you event


Maurice: Yeah definitely not too intrusive, we don`t ask for any phone numbers, lets just get that straight! (All laugh) We also offer the choice of a 2nd lively set later on and the option of a DJ service throughout the night.

Darren: We offer a dedicated swing and soul show too, along with literally hundreds of other songs, you can mix and match as much as you like. We are pretty versatile but I can`t do the splits anymore (laugh)

Sounds great guys, Is it just weddings you perform at or can people hire you for their party?

 Maurice: we perform at any event from house parties, corporate events to weddings and we have even performed at a divorce party which was slightly weird but good nonetheless.


That sounds interesting, with regards to payment, can the client pay you on the day or can they pay Garston direct prior to the day?

 Darren: It`s totally up to them, a deposit of 15% + VAT of the agreed amount is required to secure the date, this is paid directly to Garston. You can then pay the final balance 1 month before the event or the remaining fee to us on the day.

 Darren: No problem, thanks for the extremely hot coffee and biscuit on the side which I will have later.

Finally, do you have any funny stories from your time performing as The Sing a Long Waiters?

 Maurice: We were once asked by a bride and groom to ‘accidentally`drop the wedding cake as we brought it in to the venue, it was hilarious, we really messed up the floor and people were running around and panicking but the bride and groom were laughing so much, when we burst into song it all made sense and then the `real’ waiters brought out the `real’ cake.

Darren: I also carried a birthday cake (at a wedding?!) to the top table that had a giant sparkler in it, which then caught fire to the ribbon round the side, it was a bit awkward. We do love it when people want to get involved with the surprise as it validates the humour and makes it more believable but the guests were quite shocked with the cake drop..

{Fun, outdoor, festival weddings are all the rage at the moment}

This string quartet are young, trendy and fresh and just perfect for during the ceremony and drinks reception at an outdoor wedding. Filling the air with soft atmospheric and classical sounds but with that modern twist.



So everyone is sat outside waiting for the bride to arrive the sun is shining of course – as planned – but it just needs that added sparkle to make it just perfect. Some easy listening for the guests to enjoy but something that just stays in the background.

If this is something that you are seeking then stick to unamplified music, it is gentle and can just filter in throughout your special day. Chosing something like acoustic guitar can be a great choice, it is extremely versitile and the musician can really change it up in the drop of a hat as you move through the different stages of the wedding day just by chosing different tracks with a range of styles and tempos they can really get that festival feel going as the day progresses into the big evening party.

Your wedding is all about you so really personalise your song choices and give your choice of entertainment some real meaning.



So you have planned your outdoor festival wedding trying to be bold and different, out to break the classic wedding stereotype so make sure you send that same message with your entertainment as well.

Again much like the string quartet, brass instruments also have a bit of an old school reputation which may just be right up your street if you are looking for that vintage influence. But take the not so cool and mix in a bit of the new and you have got something fun and unique that people of all ages will simply love.

Simon has a huge amount of experience performing at hundreds of weddings a year so you know you are in good hands. So you and all your wedding guests are enjoying the most fantastic meal, the waiters are clearing away the starters when you soon realise some of those ‘waiters’ are not really who they claim to be –  when they suddenly burst into song!

What do you love most about your performing with the band?
The essence of live horns – they really add something to create the vibe. You can’t beat a live band and the ambience created by double bass, horns and piano. Its also an act that stretches a musician which is a satisfying challenge when performing. The horns and vintage look always impress guests.

Tell us a little about the swing show.
We take you through all the classics of male and female Jazz, Swing and Jump Jive singing. Featuring songs by the Great Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Bobby Darrin and Rat pack. It doesn’t just focus on that though – it caters for Weddings, Events and Parties with a lively second spot featuring tunes by Caro Emerald, Ray Charles, Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway.

Do you have a most memorable moment of an event you have performed at?
The band is mainly booked for the Corporate Event, Private Function and Wedding Markets and we are very lucky as we do get to perform at some lovely venues, often with stunning views and beautiful surroundings. One of my most memorable gigs was to a packed room full of 500 university students dancing all night in Liverpool at their annual ball. Proof that Swing, Jazz & Rat Pack music is timeless and can appeal to all ages.

What type of show can a client expect from a swing band?
It of course depends upon the nature of the band – However they can expect to hear a variety of Swing and Rat Pack Classics from us but don’t surprised if we throw a modern track in swing or jump jive style…it really works! Some Swing is Mid tempo – so make sure your act has a lively second spot to fill the dance floor – that’s the reason why Doo Wop and Swing Jive/ Jump Jive is a great addition – and the singalongs like Minnie the Moocher really get the party started. You can expect them as a Jazz Quartet with double bass key and drums, A Six piece with two horns additionally, or up to a big band if your budget permits with full trumpet, trombone and sax section for the truly authentic sound.

Do you have any favourite songs you like to perform?
Love ‘Unforgettable” as it was my Grandad’s favourite – love ‘My Baby Just Cares’ – as there is a great solo – and the audience love it – but the jump jive stuff is what really gets the party started.

As a live entertainment company, we regularly book famous names and celebrities for events across the UK and overseas, however it is not always possible or affordable to have ‘the real thing’ perform at your event. The next best thing would be to hire a tribute act.

A tribute act is an artiste who specifically performs the music of a well-known music act. Alternatively it could be a comedy tribute, in which an artiste pays tribute to a famous comedian.

The main way in which a tribute band or act differs from a cover singer or band that plays songs by other artistes is that Tribute Acts and Tribute Band strive to capture every nuance of the genuine artistes’ performance and appearance for a perfect copy of their show, vocally and visually.

The popularity of tribute artistes seems to be increasing as the prices of seeing the original artistes are getting higher and higher. With Tribute Artistes, you can watch and listen to your  favourite singers and bands with the tribute singer or tribute band performing as the original artists but at a price that is affordable.

Tributes generally perform the following type of sets.

1 x 60 minute performance as their tribute


1 x 45 minutes as their tribute and 1 x 45 minutes as themselves performing mixed covers.

How long have you been performing your Jessie J tribute?

I have been performing my Jessie J tribute for just over two years now. This is by far the best decision I have ever made regards my singing, as I do really enjoy it and also the financial benefits are a bonus.

How much work was involved in putting the show together?

For me as a tribute there is a lot of work involved, as you have to do your homework regards watching the act that you are performing like, also a lot of editing of tracks and finding the exact costumes really helps your show stand out from other tribute acts.

What made you decide to form a tribute to this particular artiste?

I have never really been a fan of tribute acts… it is never something I thought I would see myself doing, that is until Jessie J came along, and for me she is a very challenging vocalist, I am a big fan of her music which also helps. I really do think that with Jessie J it is absolutely crucial to try and capture her vocal similarity as that is what she is all about.

In all your shows as Jessie J to date, what has been your favourite?

 My favourite show as Jessie J so far would have to be when I performed with a four piece live band at Matthew Street Festival in my home town of Liverpool, in front of thousands (including my family). Being with a live band takes the tribute to a whole other level and allows me to do even more tricks just like Jessie J as there is more flexibility with how the show runs.

What is the most enjoyable thing about working as a tribute artiste today?

 The most enjoyable thing about working as a tribute is getting to sing Jessie J’s music on a regular basis as I am a fan myself, but also when I get a booking for someone else that is a fan and they are overwhelmed that makes it all the more enjoyable. When I do holiday Parks as Jessie J it is great to see the kids faces light up and sing along knowing all of the words. It really is a dream job!

What packages do you offer as Jessie J?

I can do my Jessie J show a few different ways, the first one being with just me using backing track, also with my LED backdrop and a full sound and light show run by a professional sound and Lighting engineer using top-quality equipment.

Secondly I can do my Jessie J show with just me and an acoustic guitar player to give it a more intimate feel, for me this is where it is crucial to sound like her a lot more as there is less music to hide behind.

And last but not least my absolute favourite is to perform as Jessie J with a live band but there are costs involved as I would only want to use top-quality musicians, but the results of the show are definitely worth it.

What is your favourite song to perform?

With being a fan of Jessie J I do enjoy singing all of her songs but I think stand out ones are ‘Domino – acoustic’  “sexy lady’, ‘price tag- acoustic’ and ‘excuse my rude’.

Are you a fan of the real Jessie J, have you seen her perform in person?

From the very first time I saw Jessie J perform (on YouTube) at the pre-Brit awards party I was blown away.  From that moment on I could not stop watching her. I went to watch her last concert at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, and as soon as the tickets for the forest gigs were announced I booked my tickets within the first hour, I’m also taking my children to watch her as they love her as well. I suppose they have no choice when all they ever here is her music constantly playing lol.

What do you do to prepare for a tribute performance?

To prepare for a tribute gig I watch a bit of Jessie J on YouTube and listen to her music before I’m about to perform. I also try and listen to her speaking as this I find is the hardest bit. I have all of the exact make up that she wears and it has to be put on in a sequence so there is a lot of preparation that goes in to the whole tribute. 

Anything else you wish to add?

People always ask me ‘Why don’t you do another tribute?’ The reason I would never do another tribute is because my heart has to be in what I am doing and I really am a fan of Jessie J and her music.  I do sing in quite a similar style to her anyway which helps it just be so much more of an enjoyable experience all round.

I hope to be doing the tribute for a long time to come and that Jessie J sticks around and carries on being successful but I can’t see this being a problem as she is very talented and has longevity!

A popular option for the wedding breakfast and/or for the evening reception is to hire a solo singer who will perform to high quality backing tracks providing the sound of a full band. Our solo wedding singers perform at small and large weddings and have professional sound equipment to cater for small and larger venues.

Hiring a solo wedding singer can also help with budget and space eg if you have a small area for performance but still want the live entertainment buzz at your wedding, then this is a live entertainment option for you.

There are many important questions to ask and answers required when choosing your wedding entertainment supplier. Below is our responses to some of the most frequently asked questions

Q. How do I choose the artiste which is right for my wedding?

A. Our website contains hundreds of artiste profiles of different music genres from all over the UK. The majority of artiste profiles contain audio clips, photos, video clips, song lists, testimonials etc to help you in your search for the perfect live entertainment for your wedding

Q. Can I speak to an experienced entertainment advisor who can help me further in choosing my wedding entertainment?

A. Yes, we positively encourage this! Our office is open Monday – Friday, 9am – 5.00pm. All of the artistes on the website have been seen performing live (often many times) by a member of the booking team who will listen to your requirements, provide advice and recommend the most suitable live entertainment

Q. I would like to see the artiste perform live before I proceed and book

A. Understandable, but not always practical and possible. We can only provisionally hold a date on one of our artistes realistically for a few days. Our artistes perform at many weddings and functions throughout the UK and these may not be open to the public for obvious reasons. It may be a few weeks or even months before they have a booking which is open to the public, in this time your artiste may not be available on your chosen date leading to disappointment. Garston Entertainments advertised wedding singers, bands and entertainment is carefully selected, quality and reliable live entertainment. Your entertainment advisor will honestly and professionally advise and recommend the artiste most suitable for your wedding

Q. How do I know that the wedding singer or band that I choose is the one I will see at my wedding?

A. Simple, everything you see and hear on our website is what will perform at your wedding if you choose to book. Personnel in bands particularly do change from time to time and we are vigilant in maintaining our knowledge of each individual band and its` members. If a member change does not alter the quality of the band in a negative sense then we will continue to allow the band to honour existing bookings. If the band has a major change of line up or the singer is replaced we will review the band and advise any client with an existing booking, that there has been a significant change and consequently either reassure them to continue with the booking or recommend replacing with a quality alternative band

Q. If I book an artiste with Garston, how secure is my booking?

A. When you book an artiste with Garston Entertainments you have the security and peace of mind of dealing with a professional company that was established in 1978. Every year we supply live entertainment to thousands of events, functions, venues and weddings. Garston Entertainments use industry approved contracts. The contracts are legally binding and cannot be cancelled except in the case of a fatality, illness, force majeure, war, act of god etc. Full terms will appear on the contract

Q. Why book with an agency and not direct with the artiste?

A. There are many beneficial reasons to secure your wedding entertainment with Garston Entertainments, please see 10 top reasons to book your wedding entertainment with us. Other essential points to consider and common misconceptions are that artistes are not necessarily cheaper by booking direct! They may be performing many bookings with us per year and therefore we have buying power to secure the most competitive price.

Our office is a full time structured organization that books and deals with artistes in a professional capacity every day of the year. Artistes have a responsibility to us when performing on our bookings to uphold our reputation and to adhere to our codes of conduct. A direct booking with an artiste may not be contracted which could lead to them not turning up, or cancelling to accept a better/higher priced booking.

We are full members of the largest trade association of its kind (The Agents Association of Great Britain) and as such adhere to a strict code of conduct. For security, peace of mind, quality and professionalism, book your wedding entertainment through Garston Entertainments

Q. What happens if the artiste cancels due to illness/accident?

A. This is unlikely, but as your live entertainment is a human being, this cannot be ruled out. Firstly, full evidence from the artiste – example – medical note, breakdown report etc would be required from the artiste within 7 days. Secondly, Garston Entertainments has a superb network of artistes and will utilize our experience and contacts to seek to offer a similar standard artiste as a replacement. We operate a full emergency standby service till 9pm, 365 days of the year, where an entertainment advisor will do everything possible to provide the best solution to any situation that may occur

Q. Can I speak with the artiste directly before my Wedding?

A. Once you have booked your live entertainment with us you can update your entertainment advisor at any time with any additional information example, first dance, wedding itinerary etc. These will all be forwarded and confirmed with your chosen wedding entertainer. If you would then like to speak directly with your artiste then this can be arranged a few weeks before the wedding.

Q. Do I have to pay a deposit?

A. In order to secure your booking, Garston Entertainments will require a small deposit (usually approximately 20% + vat of the total fee). This deposit is none refundable. However, If the artiste cancels due to illness/accident/fatality we will seek to offer a suitable, replacement artiste (s). If you decide not to accept the replacement(s) offered then we will refund 50% of your deposit paid. The remaining 50% deposit balance will be retained by Garston Entertainments towards ours administration costs in maintaining the booking

Q. What Payment methods do you accept?

A. We accept cheques, postal orders, BACS payments and direct payments into our business account.

Paul is an exceptional singer, musician and performer in demand across the UK.

A massive fan of all musical styles Paul performs a wide range of material from a large repertoire making him suitable for all occasions and events. He prides himself on performing an up to date set together with a range of classics guaranteed to get the party rocking, whether it be Wayne Rooney’s house party as he has previously performed or a Corporate event he has the versatility, charisma and professionalism to ensure your event is a success.

What do you love most about your job?

I love going to different places, venues and meeting lots of different people and characters at my performances.  I really enjoy performing and entertaining people and especially enjoy being part of peoples special occasions at weddings and parties.

I love that every show can be a little bit different and its great to be doing what I am doing.

Tell us a little about the shows you offer….

I perform 3 shows as well as my standard show performing a mix of classics right through the decades with classic pop hits from the 50’s right through to the latest chart hits.

I also perform an acoustic ‘Live Lounge’ show where i perform with my acoustic guitar and loop pedal a range of acoustic pop covers stripped right back to the core of the song.

Perfect for corporate events, wine bars/restaurants and weddings. I perform classic songs where i also create multiple guitar parts and vocal harmonies looping elements of the song for creative rich songs.

I offer a tribute to Britpop show, ‘Britpop Anthems’ featuring classic tracks from the 90’s Britpop genre perfect for the indie lovers out there.

I also perform an 80’s tribute show ‘Smash Hits of the 80’s’ performing great range of songs from one of my fav genres of music, featuring synth pop, guitar rock ballads and some of the alternative hits from the 80s years.

Do you have a most memorable moment of an event you have performed at?

I perform at Manchester City writing and performing original comedy songs about match days and players and i also arranged and recorded an new version of the clubs song Blue Moon. I sang this on the pitch just before City played Manchester United in front of forty seven thousand fans in an electric atmosphere. As a big City fan it was an amazing experience and a memory i’ll hold forever.

What kind of requests do you get for weddings?

Amongst performing numerous first dance songs for couples weddings i have often been asked to write and perform an original comedy song about the bride & groom and how they met. With information provided separately by the bride and groom I have made song about them giving a totally unique twist to the day and a personal touch for the wedding couple.

Do you have any favourite songs you like to perform?

I make and produce my own little mash up songs of classic hits and party tunes that I blend together to keep the dance floor rocking. I also love to sing ballads that are often hits from female singers. Some of the classic songs from over the years are also great to perform, they have stood the test of time and its great to perform them knowing they are sure to get people on the dance floor.

As a guitar player and Manchester musician I am a fan of some of the all the Manchester bands and artists like Oasis, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays as well as the great indie /guitar tunes from the great guitar bands past and present.

What packages do you offer?

I offer 4 packages, my standard show covering all hits from the decades right up to chart hits of today, an acoustic ‘Live Lounge’ show.

A britpop tribute and an 80’s tribute show.

I can also DJ classic wedding/party sets and can beat mix if you are more into clubbing tunes and funky house sets

I can perform at any point of your day,, there are various packages that cover this, I can even take care of your full days entertainment from your ceremony, right to the very end with a lively DJ set.

I also have a great sound system and lighting set up to make sure that my show looks and sounds professional and pleasing.
